Feeding
Did you know that parakeets need more than just seed? They do need seed but only a small amount and instead their diet needs to be full of veggies, fruit, grains and pellets!
Making chop is a great way to be sure the birds get everything they need! Here is the recipe I made, (do less if you don't want a bunch)
1 carrot
1 tiny yellow squash
2 romane lettuce leafs
2 swiss chard leaves
Half a zucchini
1/4 cup cooked corn kernels
A bit of broccoli
1/4 cup grains ( oats/oat groats, rice, millet, buckwheat etc...)
A bit of cauliflower
Half a small apple
2 orange sections
Add anything else you want just make sure it's parrot safe (:
Throw it all into a food processor, chop until its the size you want!
Add flax seed meal and/or chia seeds if you like. Flax seed meal has a nutty flavor that most birds enjoy and it soaks up moisture that otherwise would make mushy chop. Chia seeds can get some birds to want to eat chop more because it is a seed! It also soaks up moisture as well.
Either put it in a container in the fridge (lasts 3-4 days) or put it in an ice cube tray and freeze! (lasts about 6 months)
Enjoy! (or rather your parakeet)
